Urban League installs state of the art HVAC system

On December 7, 2017, Winston-Salem Urban League (WSUL) installed phase one of a state of the art HVAC system. The system was made possible by The Cannon Foundation. On September 5, 2017, The Cannon Foundation Board of Directors approved a $50,000.00 grant to WSUL for HVAC Upgrades.

WSUL approached the foundation in June of 2017 after years of searing hot summers and ice cold winters threatened WSUL program performance. WSUL’s two locations have a total seven HVAC units, the oldest of which is more than 40 years old. Over the course of the last decade, every unit has partially or fully failed.

The HVAC system is being installed by All About Care Heating & Air. All About Care Heating & Air was the successful bidder, having responded to a public bid process led by WSUL’s Board of Directors and Property Committee chaired by architect Jimmy Norwood, Jr. and Tim Bell, Director of Property Management & Operations for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. All About Care Heating & Air, Inc offered the lowest and most responsive bid. Dustin Millirons, Sales Manager for All About Care Heating & Air, Inc commented, “I’ve been working with the Urban League for a long time. They do important work for this community. I wanted to make sure they had a first class heating and air system that delivers just like they deliver for this community”.The total project cost is $67,390.00. Under the grant agreement, WSUL through other funding partnerships and earned income will cover the remaining $17,390.

James Perry, WSUL CEO added, “The quality of our built environment is fundamental to achieving our mission. The Cannon Foundation’s support is a game changer. Our programming will no longer be subject to the whim of the weather, shutting down during blazing summer weeks or on frosty winter days.

The Winston-Salem Urban League empowers and advocates for African Americans and other disenfranchised communities, and promotes socioeconomic progress and parity through education, training, and civic engagement.

The Cannon Foundation is an independent foundation established in 1943 by Charles A. Cannon, President and Chairman of Cannon Mills Company for more than 50 years. Focused predominantly on North Carolina, this endowed Foundation primarily supports capital projects and equipment needs for nonprofit organizations.
